John Stott, the writer of Basic Christianity” and is an English Christian leader and Anglican clergyman who is noted as a leader of the worldwide evangelical movemen, retell his conversion while at Rugby School in 1938 after heard Rev. Eric Nash on a sermon entitled to “What Then Shall I Do with Jesus, Who Is Called the Christ?  ”  :

“Here, then, is the crucial question which we have been leading up to. Have we ever opened our door to Christ? Have we ever invited him in? This was exactly the question which I needed to have put to me. For, intellectually speaking, I had believed in Jesus all my life, on the other side of the door. I had regularly struggled to say my prayers through the key-hole. I had even pushed pennies under the door in a vain attempt to pacify him. I had been baptized, yes and confirmed as well. I went to church, read my Bible, had high ideals, and tried to be good and do good. But all the time, often without realising it, I was holding Christ at arm’s length, and keeping him outside. I knew that to open the door might have momentous consequences. I am profoundly grateful to him for enabling me to open the door. Looking back now over more than fifty years, I realise that that simple step has changed the entire direction, course and quality of my life.”

Materi ini dipersiapkan untuk perayaan Natal FIB UI 2010, Materi ini berbicara mengenai “Damai Yang Sejati”. Sebagaimana Kristus adalah pembawa Damai demikian pula setiap orang Kristen juga dituntut sebagai pembawa Damai bagi lingkungan sekelilingnya.

Permasalahan adalah bagaimana kita bisa membawa Damai, jikalau damai itu tidak pernah ada dihati kita? Dan hal ini-lah yang menimbulkan pertanyaan besar, bukankah janji Allah melalui malaikat kepada umat manusia pada malam natal adalah Damai Sejahtera di bumi? Dan jikalau janjinya adalah damai, maka dimanakah damai sejati itu?

Kehilangan Damai sejati mengakibatkan banyak dari umat Kristen mulai meninggalkan ibadahnya, kemudian menjadi jemaat NAPAS (datang hanya pada saat Natal dan Paskah). Hal ini merupakan cerminan dari kerinduan mereka, karena kehilangan damai di hati selama bertahun-tahun, untuk mencari “damai” itu di malam natal! Tetapi seringkali kita gagal, seakan-akan kita salah mengerti akan apa itu damai yang sejati.

Materi ini sekali lagi ingin mengupas kebenaran tentang natal, dan bahaya si iblis dalam memanipulasi kebenaran untuk menghasilkan kedamaian yang palsu. Kedamaian sejati hanyalah melalui Kristus, tetapi tidak berhenti hanya pada keselamatan itu saja, melalui ketaatan dalam keselamatan lah maka kedamaian sejati itu akan bertumbuh didalam hati kita. Dari seorang temans, dan sebuah pertanyaan, apakah aku sudah menjadi seorang murid Kristus, seorang Kristen.

 A Christian is one that believes things his reason cannot comprehend, and hopes for things which neither he nor any man alive ever saw.  He believes Three to be One and One to be Three; a Father not to be older than His Son, and the Son to be equal with His Father.  He believes himself to be precious in God’s sight, and yet loathes himself in his own.  He dares not justify himself even in those things wherein he can find no fault with himself, and yet believes that God accepts him in those services wherein he is able to find many faults.  He is so ashamed that he dares not open his mouth before the Lord, yet comes with boldness to God, and asks him anything he needs.  He hath within him both flesh and spirit, and yet he is not doubleminded; he is often led captive by the law of sin, yet in never gets dominion over him.  He cannot sin, yet can do nothing without sin.  He is so humble as to acknowledge himself to deserve nothing but evil, and yet he believes that God means him all good.
